TV to Comic

The translation of television to comic doesn't always work too well. Whether it's a combination of character likenesses, licensing approvals or whatever else, the comics rarely feel like the TV shows.

In fact, it usually seems to work better when the TV shows are off the air.

The X-Files had a decent run through Topps comics in the 90s - and Topps also ran Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess books at the time, but where are Topps now?

These days, licenses seem to be split between IDW (AngelSpike, Doctor Who and Star Trek) and Dynamite (Battlestar Galactica, Xena, Highlander, Army of Darkness), with Dark Horse picking up Star Wars, Firefly/Serenity and Buffy (of course) and Wildstorm snagging the occasional one - like Supernatural, X-Files and the long-rumored but never-confirmed Veronica Mars.
Thing is, I can rarely get into them. I want to, because I like the shows that they're based on but they rarely feel 'real' to me. There's the sense that it doesn't really matter what happens in the comic because it will never, ever 'count'.

The exception to the rule seems to be Buffy and Angel - and that's probably helped by the fact that they involve the shows creators in them. But when you're reading Battlestar Galactica, it seems unlikely that anything there will ever carry over into the show.

By and large, I just can't get into them. Are they aimed at a different audience to regular comics readers? Does that audience ever cross into mainstream comics? Is there a way to get them too?

Well the Army of Darkness ones you have to take with a grain of salt and not expect the highest level of writing...it doesn't pretend to be anything more then what it is, corny horror movie dialog.

The X-Files comics for what they were, weren't actually half bad....least until they switched artists about midway through the series, which killed it.

All in all I think TV oriented comics are dependent on your overall tastes. A BSG comic is a pretty hard sale to a Buffy fan, as likewise a Buffy comic to a pure BSG fan. Though...as an aside, the Doctor Who comics IDW is doing....AWESOME.

....and if they did ever do a VM comic series, I'd be all over that like white on rice.

I completely agree that I can never get into comics based on movies or TV shows. Like you said, Rich, there's just not the feeling that it "counts." To me, it always just feels like prettied up fan-fiction. So, I don't think I've ever been able to follow a series based on an outside source.

The Amazing Mutant Race 4

Seriously!

Also like the Buffy comics. Thought the serenity Comics didn't get the art right.

The Art is crucial to making a TV show into a comic. Its has to have the same look and feel as the TV show. If it can't do that then its not going to work.

Nick - I actually kinda like the Army of Darkness ones. They're just goofy fun.I picked up the first BSG trade on sale and it was okay but not much felt like it happened.

And VM. Oh yeah.

General - I think it helps where the show's already done and the comics (or novels, I guess, for DS9 and TNG) are the 'canon' now where stuff can happen.

Koma - I actually thought Will Conrad's Serenity art was good, but that the story was just dull.

Rich, I agree about that. I think that (in addition to Whedon's involvement) that's probably another reason the Buffy series works better. Anytime the original movie series or TV series is over, and the comic is a continuation, it at least feels like the comic isn't just squeezing things between the cracks.
