Over the weekend, DC announced their new 'Minx' imprint designed to target teen female readers - and more power to them. The books will be priced under $10 and have roughly 150 pages of content - so they are essentially going after manga readers.
And it's about time that one of the big two did.
Still, I couldn't help but notice something missing when I read through the four launch titles' creative teams:
- Clubbing - by Andi Watson and Josh Howard
- Re-Gifters - by Mike Carey, Marc Hempel and Sonny Liew
- Good as Lily - by Derek Kirk Kim and Jesse Hamm
- The P.L.A.I.N. Janes - by Cecil Castellucci and Jim Rugg
With the exception of Cecil Castellucci, unless I'm very mistaken, these creators are all male.
Wouldn't it make a little more sense to launch the imprint with women-driven comics? Y'know, comics for women by women, or something like that?
What, were Gail Simone and Tamora Pierce too busy? What about an older talent like Louise Simonson?
I mean, good idea DC, but come on....

I completely support the decision for DC to do this - and I agree that the talent pool runs a little shallow in the female creator area (although the ones that are working in the field are generally excellent).
Still, it would have been nice...
Andi Watson is also a female creator.
I, like you, think that there should have been more female creators on this line, but I'm willing to give it a chance. Karen Berger seems to be brilliant at targeting her audiences at Vertigo. I have a feeling she'll do the same at Minx.
Hi Loren - sorry, but Andi Watson is definitely a guy: http://www.andiwatson.biz/
And a Brit guy to boot! Excellent!
Regarding confusion over Andi Watson's gender... his wife, Philippa, goes by Phil. :P
That's odd - James Meeley has removed his comments.
I know that he was taking some flack for it from www.comicsworthreading.com but I think it was a valid point even if I didn't particularly agree with it.
He also pointed out (before he left) that apparently Andi Watson's wife Phillipa goes by Phil just to confuse us even more. True or not?

Oh, my deleting my comments had nothing to do with you or your blog. I really enjoy coming here and reading your thoughts on stuff. I just refuse to "perform" for JDC and her cronies. And since I can't stop her from being the bitter crone she is, I'll simply take away what she wants to use to belittle and berate me.
I'll still be coming around here, though, and reading your stuff. I just might be posting a lot less, is all.
Keep up the good work.
James
D'oh! You're right. And, here I was going through my life thinking that Andi Watson was a woman.
James - glad to hear you're still around, all be it in phantom form...
Loren - I know; to be honest I thought the exact same thing till I googled him! Great minds and all that!
